Fees
Lawyers’ fees in France are set freely subject to applicable legal and professional rules. A written fee agreement defines the scope of work and the billing terms.
Legal framework
Under Article 10 of French Law No. 71-1130 of 31 December 1971, fees may take into account:
- the client’s financial situation,
- the complexity of the matter,
- costs incurred,
- the lawyer’s reputation,
- the work performed.
Billing arrangements
- hourly basis,
- fixed fee (defined scope and deliverables),
- daily or half-day rate, in particular for on-site support within companies.
Success fees
Fees cannot be based solely on the outcome of court proceedings. However, an additional success fee may be agreed on top of the main remuneration, subject to applicable rules.
